Black Charcoal Ice Cream

While black charcoal ice cream looks like an Insta-worthy food trend, it also comes with powerful detox benefits. Activated charcoal has been used for thousands of years to bind and remove toxins and heavy metals from your body. When you add it to treats like ice cream, activated charcoal also turns food black — perfect when you want to feed your dark side. 😉

Since charcoal has a neutral flavor and ultra-fine texture, this charcoal ice cream gets its delicious taste from powdered vanilla bean and smooth cacao butter. Serve it with whipped coconut cream or dark chocolate chunks for dessert that helps you bounce back.

Black Charcoal Ice Cream


Start to Finish: 1 hour (15 minutes active)


*When following the original ice cream recipe, omit the cocoa powder and add an additional teaspoon of powdered vanilla bean.


  1. Break open activated charcoal capsules and pour contents into a small bowl. Discard capsule coating.
  2. Prepare ice cream according to recipe instructions. When mixture is mostly blended, add charcoal powder and continue blending until well incorporated.
  3. Add mixture to an ice cream maker as instructed and churn until creamy.
  4. Serve chilled with chocolate chunks and whipped coconut cream, if desired.
