#BETHEPROOF: From Blah to Bulletproof, How I Took Back Control of My Life
In my early thirties, I went through what I can only describe as an existential crisis. I had a great life by all societal standards, yet I just felt blah. Like I was simply going through the motions, never feeling truly connected or inspired.
Then, one evening, a random YouTube video asked me why I was here—why I got up in the morning—and those questions turned my life upside down. Not only did I have no idea what the purpose of my life was, but I had never even thought about it. So, I vowed to figure it out.
Over the next couple years, I made a lot of changes in my life. Some were surface level—like my diet and my job—and others were rooted deep in my views and beliefs about life. Change on any level is rarely easy, but luckily, Bulletproof was there to support me: mind, body and spirit.
The podcast that opened my mind
My introduction to the world of Bulletproof was through the flagship podcast. Once I discovered it in 2017, I couldn’t get enough. I listened to it just about every morning, constantly pausing to take notes or do more research.
As I was learning more about myself and what I wanted out of life, my mind was craving any kind of new information and the podcast never failed to deliver. I learned about lectins and mitochondria, the power of the microbiome and the importance of the mind-body connection.
Listening to it reinforced a major theme in the beginning stages of my self-discovery process—that there was a different way to view things; that the most widely accepted way wasn’t the only way.
I quickly realized that if I wanted to change the way I felt about my life, my body could either be an ally or an obstacle. I chose the former.
My Bulletproof beginning
First things first, I cleaned up my diet. I downloaded the Bulletproof Diet Roadmap and tried to eat as much in the green zone as possible. I changed my drinking habits and always had Bulletproof Coconut Charcoal on hand when I went out to eat.
I put Bulletproof Brain Octane C8 MCT Oil in my morning shakes and made lunches to bring to work. The discipline wasn’t always easy, but it was worth it.
Not only did I start to feel better physically, but I felt stronger mentally.
Until that point, so much of my life was lived just going with the flow of what was normal or expected by the people around me. It felt refreshing to proactively take control; like I was finally taking a stand for what I wanted.
Kacie’s Bulletproof tip: I’ve learned that living the life you want is a very specific muscle. When unused and weak, it’s easy to fall into the trap of what other people want or expect for you. Every time someone joked or jabbed about how healthy I was being, it was an opportunity for me to strengthen that muscle; an opportunity for me to break my pattern of people-pleasing and instead, choose to live my life how I wanted to.
A foray into intermittent fasting
I tried all kinds of fasting, from Bulletproof-driven tips to weekly, 24-hour fasts. What I loved most about fasting was that it taught me two things:
- I can choose my own mealtimes. For so long, I ate during “normal” mealtimes whether I was hungry or not.
- Psychological hunger is not the same as physical hunger. Most of the time when I thought I was hungry, it was just my mind telling me it was time to eat because that’s what it was conditioned to.
Nowadays, I try to eat only when I feel physically hungry, which typically ends up being a 16:8 fasting diet. It’s been yet another exercise in breaking away from mainstream thinking and setting my own terms for my life.
Today, I feel much more connected to myself. And I now understand the true power of connection. Everything within us is connected – our body, mind, emotions and spirit. We are a system, and that system is either working to our benefit or to our detriment.
When I give into temptation and eat fried food or have one too many adult beverages, I feel it the next day (or two or three). Not just physically, but mentally and emotionally, as well. And sometimes, I choose to do so anyway and live with the consequences. But the difference is, it’s now a choice I consciously make.

Because, that’s the thing – we don’t have to do it all alone. We don’t have to willpower ourselves to feel better about our lives. We can take back control.
